Mercedes-Benz extends the A-Class until 2028 and confirms successor

Mercedes is sticking to the A-Class for a longer period of time. A successor to the entry-level model is also to come.

Originally, Mercedes-Benz had already wanted to discontinue the A-Class, then it was extended until 2026, now even until 2028. The compact class at Mercedes is not only going into extension, but is also to receive a successor. In an interview with Automobilwoche, the head of sales at Mercedes-Benz, Mathias Geisen, said that further models are planned based on the MMA architecture (known from the new CLA), such as a new entry-level model.

Plans for luxury brand buried?

The discontinuation of the A-Class was supposed to be part of the big swing to a pure luxury brand at Mercedes-Benz, which envisaged the new Mercedes-Benz CLA as a new (expensive) entry-level model. These plans were probably quietly buried with the announcement. Mathias Geisen once again emphasized at Automobilwoche that the A-Class is a highly relevant vehicle and enjoys great popularity. Therefore, the model has now been extended until 2028 to avoid a gap in supply.

In addition to the renewed extension of the A-Class, Geisen also announced that there will be other models based on the new MMA architecture. Specifically, Geisen said that there will be "an entry-level model in the world of Mercedes-Benz in the long term". It is still unclear whether a new A-Class is actually planned, or whether only a model in a similar price range will come. It is possible that another cheaper e-SUV will be created on the MMA platform as an entry-level model in addition to the already announced CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB models.
